Diego Salado was the veteran explosives expert at Pirotecnia Esteban Martín with over 20 years there under his belt and he was dearly loved by his family and friends.

In other words, at his 39 years of age, he had worked there most of his life and enjoyed every minute of it. He had the knack of painting the sky with the ideas in his head; his work was not a case of simply sending up explosive in the right order but literally of creating a massive painting in the sky – he was master at it.

In fact, so good had the team become that Diego recently came back from a job in Saudi Arabia; such is the company’s renown.

He leaves behind a wife and three children, and a string of heartbroken friends. He had been married 12 years. But he not only leaves behind a family in mourning, but also a work place where nothing will ever be the same.

At his funeral, they sent up rockets (thundershis favourite kind) — how could it have been otherwise?
