Several boats/dinghies caught on fire within Málaga Port this afternoon around 13.00h. Fortunately, nobody was hurt.
The emergency call-centre, 112 received the first call to report the incident at that time, soon followed by several more, saying that a number of small boats were in flames in the part of the port near the mouth of Gaudalmedina Rivernear the Iron bridge.
The craft and objects damaged belonged to the Guardia Civil compound for confiscated material. The zodiacs and wooden boats used by people smugglers had been stored there for some time, stored as evidence, awaiting trial.
The call centre despatched the fire service, an ambulance, the Guardia Civil, the Policía Local and Cruz Roja, as well as alerting the Port Authorities.
The Fire Department confirmed that seven or eight embarkations were affected before the fires were completely extinguished.
The Policía Local were required to direct traffic on the Promenade Antonio Machado as many drivers were slowing down or had stopped upon seeing the fires. Normal traffic flow was quickly restored.
