A fire broke out this morning in La Herradura in a first-floor flat on Paseo de Andrés Segovia, near the castle.
The emergency services were alerted around 08.00h and the fire service, Guardia Civil, Policía Local and an ambulance were soon at the scene.
Inside the flat was an elderly couple who died as a consequence of the fire. Eighteen block residents (amongst them, two minors) had to be evacuated because of the smoke and intense heat.
Fire personnel were still working to extinguish the fire and clear smoke from the building early this afternoon, so that the bodies could be recovered.
The Mayor, Juan Jose Ruiz Joya, has declared today as an official day of mourning and flags on municipal buildings are being flown at half mast. He also offered his personal condolences to the affected family.
It appears that the woman did manage to get out, but had reentered the flat to save her husband – they were both in their 80s.
