During Semana Santa, when the processions were out on the streets, the Motril, Policía Local were 63 officers down.

Beforehand the police warned the Easter brotherhoods that there would be no police on duty and that the brotherhoods would bear full responsibility if they insisted upon going ahead and an accident occurred – luckily none did.

The Mayor, Luisa García Chamorro, called a press meeting to make public the situation during Easter. She thanked those officers from the municipal police force who did turn up for duty, as well as expressing her gratitude to the Policía Nacional for their collaboration. She also had words of praise for the volunteers who had helped out.

Finally, she took the opportunity to say that she had convoked a meeting with the relevant unions to negotiate the work/salary conditions of all municipal employees.
