Salobreña councillors, Plácido Leyva and Carmen González, have called for parking meters to be deactivated when they are not in service.
Visitors to the municipality put money into parking meters even though the Blue Zones are not in use… and the machines readily accept the payment although it is completely unnecessary.
The two councillors belong to the local branch of citizens political party and these sort of recommendations just before local elections earn votes, of course.
They argue that besides the meters taking payment when they are not supposed to, (which goes into the pockets of the private company that run them) it reflects negatively on the municipality.
For this reason, citizens urges the ruling party to make the company that manages the parking meters to either cover them up or block the coin slot so no money can be deposited, when the Blue Zones are not in use.
