The old section of the N-340 between La Herradura and Nerja has long been known to be dangerous but just how dangerous is it?
The national, motoring association, Royal Automobile Club of Spain (RACE) draws up a report on black spots on Spanish roads each year and for more than ten years it has listed this section of road as a black spot, especially for bikers.
This year is no different and lists the Almuñécar/Nerja road within the ten worst black spots in the country specifically between kilometre points 296.4 and 312.9 (a little over 16 kilometres).
In fact, it rates as the second most dangerous length of road. There’s one other place that is calculated as worse; the N-634 in Cantabria on the northern coast of Spain
As far as Granada goes, the old N-323 that connects the coast to the Jaen has a lethal section, too, between kilometre points 172.5 and 190.3.
Going back to the Nerja section, there were eight serious accidents between 2019 and 2021 (bear in mind that this period encompasses the 2020 lockdown). These accidents produced two deaths and six severely injured victims.
This section of road is a favourite for bikers precisely because of the tight bends as it follows the coastline – there are three especially tight bends, one after the other with the middle one being the tightest.
The responsibility for its upkeep lies solely with the Ministry of developmentas the road from where it leaves Maro and meets the Granada provincial border, has not been handed over the the Nerja Town Hall – from Maro to the municipal border of Torrox does come under municipal responsibility however.
