Large waves and wind bring surfers, windsurfers and kite-surfers. One of the latter needed rescuing in Almuñécar when he got into trouble.
The situation began to develop just before half three yesterday afternoon off the beach in front of Las Góndolas, which was when a beachgoer phoned the emergency services to say that a kite-surfer was in trouble.
The wind and sea current was pushing the kite-surfer towards the rocks and he couldn’t get the kite relaunched after splashing down.
The first to arrive was a Guardia Civil patrol to assess the situation. One of the officers, confronted by the angry surf and strong currents, decided to swim out to the help the kite-surfer back to the beach, despite the risk to his own life.
It was thanks to his rapid intervention without hesitation that the life of the exhausted victim could be saved. The officer had to swim out, battling against the current and waves coming in, some 300 metres to reach him.
Upon reaching the beach, the officer received a lengthy ovation from all those that had witnessed the act. Officer Miguel V.F.S. has only recently passed out from the police academy and is gaining work experience at the Motril Guardia post.
