Residents of Almayate woke up yesterday morning to find the bodies of two pedestrians who had been run over in the early hours and left by the roadside.
Almayate, which lies within the municipality of Vélez-Málaga, is traversed by the N-340, which was a far busier road before the coming of the freeway but even so, you have to have your wits about you when crossing it in any one of the small towns along the coast where it passes.
The victims, a 73-year-old man and a 58-year-old woman, were knocked over by a hit-&-run driver, who high-tailed it from the scene of the accident because there were no witnesses at that time of the morning.
The bodies were discovered around ten in the morning by a passerby, walking along the road. The discovery was first reported to the Policía Local but under these circumstances such an incident comes under the Guardia Civil jurisdiction, so they passed it on.
However, it does appear that they have located a suspected vehicle and traced the owner, who denies that it was him and that his car had been stolen. He had phoned the municipal police to say that he had found his car in a different place to where he had parked it the previous night.
The car has a broken side window and traces of blood on the bodywork. Inside were items belonging to the male victim which could be indicative of the force of impact.
Sadly, nobody heard anything in those early hours of Saturday. The identity of the victims was still not known at the time of the writing of this article.
